    Freaking Laser Beams

Looking for someone at the intersection of hacking and highly programmable laser light shows, apparently using the ILDA vertex protocol. Bonus points if that someone:

    a) Has gear in Seattle now, or
    b) Would have gear in Vegas

Yeah, I got a stunt in mind.

I thought about going to the Alexis Park with about 30 mirrors and a laser, but even the green beam is not as visible as I wish it was. Higher wattage has qualifications I do not meet.

I haven't work much with visible beams... but tell me how much power output can your LASER give you... I had work with infrared lasers, specifically with CO2, He-Ne, Mixtures, targeting in a second cavity filled out with Na in vapor at low pression, got awesome amplifications in the near infrared regions, more then a factor of three to the power at the final output at the other end in the secundary cavity of resonance... perhaps we can figure out the proper gas composition to get similar result from a visible LASER. it should not be too hard if we had more gear from others available at Defcon... Your tube is for a green LASER, maybe we can change the misture and add Ar, that should shift the spectra window a little into the blue, but should be more easy to work and a little higher gain in the amount of Photons we can stimulate... just a thought

My laser is 4.99mw, microprocessor programmed for the highest wattage possible.

I will get with you at Defcon, perhaps if you could bring it along... maybe I can figure out the proper add a second resonance cavity to it... after that it is just take readings, and mostly play with mixtures, pressions, and the proper amount of molecules ratio...

It's sealed. Doubles as a sex toy for chicks, had to get it. :> bigha dot com.

It has a lanyard so I will wear it around my neck.

I see, it's a solide state not a tube... LASER diodes are very stable, and cheap... throught I can not modify it, but again, I may be able to attach it as a source of photons to a tube... I will figure out something.

I don't know what's freakier: That Dan is looking for access to high power lasers for some sort of hack, or the fact that someone here might actually be able to help him.

Are lasers illegal in Canada in addition to satellite TV?

I toyed with the idea of trying to bring some of my equipment out to defcon, but I'm too far away without driving out.

I'm not sure what the ILDA Vertex protocol is. The DB-25 standard ILDA connector I'm familiar with was standard analog signalling (X+Y+R+G+B+Shutter, etc). I know of one free program that looks pretty good, and can drive the LinuxLaser's DAC project... the problem is, my galvos are really slow. Keep meaning to buy a set of Eyemagic's or Catweazle galvos, but never seem to have the free money. Plus with the USD to Euro exchange rate what it is it makes it that much more expensive. And I need a PCAOM. About $1200 for the galvos, about $3000 for an 8 channel PCAOM.

I own a 5 watt Spectra Physics multiline argon system, a 100mw-200mw ALC-90x style multiline argon system, and a few smaller lasers (20mw HeNe, 15mw single line 488nm argon). I have some slower galvos (G120PDs and General Scanning open loop). Was into the laser and light stuff a while ago. Recently been playing with the FreeStyler DMX software for Windows along with two HES Intellabeam 400 lights and a 750 watt ADJ strobe. Want to get away from the Intellabeam 400s since their DMX-512 implementation is bad and they are creaky.

Large argon lasers require about 2-3 gallons of water a minute and about 30 amps @ 3phase @ 208vac. Not small by any means. The generator set (~60kw?) they generally have at Defcon that runs the outdoor tent could indeed power the laser. I noticed the 3 phase cam locks running the AC units. Pretty cool.

Where it gets REALLY tricky is this. 1st, anything above 5mw requires CDRH certification on the projector. To comply with the law you need to file paperwork that your going to do a show. Last thing anyone needs is vision damage from people playing with high powered lasers. The paperwork should be filed and things setup safely.... *I* wouldn't want to be around others playing with higher powered lasers. There are people selling 3 watt DPSS handhelds now. Accidents waiting to happen.

Second, the AP is right next to an airport. Need I say more? With all of the press, all it will take is a nice unterminated skybound 1 watt 523nm beam without paperwork and defcon will be crawling.

Pictures of my laser hacking are visible on my web page:
http://users.757.org/~ethan/ and photos are availible at:
                          http://users.757.org/~ethan/pics/lasers/

I was using a laser illusions system (Windows 98 software that runs a parallel port device that provides the ILDA spec output, with open loop scanners on Accel 124 amps... maybe 8kpps speed... ).

i have to agree with A on this one. It's not so much the request that scares me, it's that it's this request and it's coming from Dan that scares me. I hope he finds the equipment he needs though, because as much as he scares me sometimes, im always impressed or blown away in the end.
