Like every year on the forums, we offer those returning contests/events/villages/social_gatherings a chance to let everyone know about what is planned for a return.
Those that let us and others know about their plan to return get a TENTATIVE forum for their contests/events/villages/social_gatherings and discussion.
KEEPING that forum still requires they submit their information to the goon/department in charge of allocating DEF CON resources.
Additionally, those that do let us know about their plan to return will get an email from defconforums@gmail.com to the forum-registered email on the account used to post their intention, when I know the "RFI" has been released, calling for their information, allowing them to request DEF CON resources.
The forums follows the decisions of those departments that control and are responsible for allocation of DEF CON resources for contests/events/villages/social_gatherings on which are approved and which are not.
I'll close forums for contests/events/villages/social_gatherings that fail to get a nod from the people in the department that has resources to offer.
If you do NOT want to go through channels, and not get DEF CON resources (like a separate forum, space, power, tables, network, etc.) you can try to go about it in the "old style" and just use a thread on the forums to generate interest and find your own resources. Several contests/events/villages/social_gatherings tried this, for DEF CON 22:
* Defcon 4 X 5K Run
* Operation /whois Perdro Pan
* Defcon Toxic BBQ X
I have no comment on this old style other than to say:
Planning these on the forums is no violation of rules on the forums. Talk about these all you want, but the forum rules mean NOTHING at DEF CON when not on the forums. There are likely risks or consequences or both with trying to get your own resources. You accept the burden of these decisions by retaining control of these decisions. If you plan to show up and just take over a table in the contest area, you will have to deal with Goons in the Contest/Events area. Keeping control means you accept responsibility for that control.
So....
Who s bringing what back? [Chris might say he's, "bringing sexy back," but it is up to us to decide if "trusting the client" is a, "good trust model for security." /me runs after making that comment.] Are you officially handing over control of your "thing" to someone else? Would you introduce them to us and make an official announcement?
This option to get an early forum will evaporate as the DEF CON Goons in charge of things like Contests and Events come online with their RFI and begin approving contests/events/villages/social_gatherings.
Thanks for your help!
