    Contests/Events/Village/Social Gatherings:Which are planned for return to DEF CON 23?

    Like every year on the forums, we offer those returning contests/events/villages/social_gatherings a chance to let everyone know about what is planned for a return.

    Those that let us and others know about their plan to return get a TENTATIVE forum for their contests/events/villages/social_gatherings and discussion.

    KEEPING that forum still requires they submit their information to the goon/department in charge of allocating DEF CON resources.

    Additionally, those that do let us know about their plan to return will get an email from defconforums@gmail.com to the forum-registered email on the account used to post their intention, when I know the "RFI" has been released, calling for their information, allowing them to request DEF CON resources.

    The forums follows the decisions of those departments that control and are responsible for allocation of DEF CON resources for contests/events/villages/social_gatherings on which are approved and which are not.

    I'll close forums for contests/events/villages/social_gatherings that fail to get a nod from the people in the department that has resources to offer.

    If you do NOT want to go through channels, and not get DEF CON resources (like a separate forum, space, power, tables, network, etc.) you can try to go about it in the "old style" and just use a thread on the forums to generate interest and find your own resources. Several contests/events/villages/social_gatherings tried this, for DEF CON 22:
    * Defcon 4 X 5K Run
    * Operation /whois Perdro Pan
    * Defcon Toxic BBQ X

    I have no comment on this old style other than to say:
    Planning these on the forums is no violation of rules on the forums. Talk about these all you want, but the forum rules mean NOTHING at DEF CON when not on the forums. There are likely risks or consequences or both with trying to get your own resources. You accept the burden of these decisions by retaining control of these decisions. If you plan to show up and just take over a table in the contest area, you will have to deal with Goons in the Contest/Events area. Keeping control means you accept responsibility for that control.

    So....

    Who s bringing what back? [Chris might say he's, "bringing sexy back," but it is up to us to decide if "trusting the client" is a, "good trust model for security." /me runs after making that comment.] Are you officially handing over control of your "thing" to someone else? Would you introduce them to us and make an official announcement?

    This option to get an early forum will evaporate as the DEF CON Goons in charge of things like Contests and Events come online with their RFI and begin approving contests/events/villages/social_gatherings.

    Thanks for your help!

    Once again the dust has started to settle on the conference, and hangovers and sleep deprivation are coming to the reality of heading back to real life tomorrow.

    Thanks to all who participated in the HHV this year! We feel it was a great success. Darknet badges were soldered, Con badges were hacked on, presentations opened the minds of not a few, and there was no fire. Thanks especially to the rest of the volunteer staff that manned the ship. There were some 12 hour days for some, and a whole extra day for most. Specifically thanks to Bombnav and Afterburn for taking the lead and securing the chance to do this again.

    We have already started thinking about how to improve things for next year. We have been discussing a number of changes and enhancements for next year. We feel we have leaned a bit too far toward the introducing the newbies to some basics, and want to add back in some deeper hardware hacking. We want to enable people to share the skills that they have, and will be calling for people to present on specific topics. We also want to have some contests where you can show them off. We are looking to integrate with other villages where ever there is overlap (ICS and Wireless, we mean you). In short, we are kicking it into ludacris speed for next year.

    The brain is fading as the sun sets and work looms tomorrow. Tweet, email, or signal us any ideas you have. We are looking to make HHV 8 rock DEF Con 23.

        I believe I can speak for GMark and the rest of our event when I say Hacker Jeopardy will indeed be back next year.

          Schemaverse will be back for our 5th year. We will have our classic 24hour championship round along with a new 1v1 ladder made up of ~20 minute rounds (more details to come next year, still sleeping off DC22 currently).

          Coindroids will be back as well.

                    The Lockpick Village will return again, for sure.

                    DEFCON Shoot is also going to be back, along with quite possibly the SiscoCoon's Hacker War Games run & gun competition.

                    I plan on running Black Bag again in some form or another. If the CnE space is the Bally's Events center and i can get a decent room in the North tower, i might finally realize the dream of running the Black Bag in a DEFCON hotel room like we do at other conferences.

I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

                      I would LOVE to be back again next year, but I'm unsure at this point since I'm actually about to make the move to FL from NV. Living is NV makes it much cheaper to setup the contest. I could easily load all my equipment and tools in my truck and drive there in 8 hrs. But 3K miles each way will be much harder. Thanks to Deviant a lot of my equipment has been stored in NV. But at the contest goes using real guns, a lot of my equipment gets shot up and always has to be rebuilt to some extent. So I would have to bring that equipment with me on the plane or ship it ahead of time.

                      I am hoping to be back in the area again before DC23, it is unclear at this time. Being that most of the equipment is still in NV I think if there is a Local there in NV that is willing to work with me that there would be a very good chance to be back again for DC23. If anyone is willing to help please PM me here on the DefCon Forums.

                      Thanks for everyone that ran the course and for the support of those that helped get the prizes and other behind the scenes things come together. It wouldn't have been the same without you.

                          We have too much fun not to bring Crash and Compile back for DEF CON 23. We already have ideas in place to make it even better.
