I like the van idea but I'm not sure about the beer. I heard a bunch of rumblings about the Rio getting pissed about people bringing in outside food (One announcement I heard was at CTF, not sure if it was just for contests or generally frowned upon). However, I would be down. You thinking of going up and down the strip (bad idea) or just making a couple stops (north strip, south strip, and maybe another)?

Buying food & booze at the Hotel keeps the venue happy.

that can work in reverse, too. keeping the con attendees happy means they are more likely to buy food and booze from the hotel.

i know that i absolutely retaliate against venues where they are shitty, slow, or whatever else. there have been plenty of cons where i intentionally bring in as much outside food and drink as possible as a personal protest against: slow service, bad selection, high prices, general ass-hattery.

this year the Rio was half-decent about most things. still, once the evenings started and the water jugs ran empty everywhere i was happy to go up to the room for refills of agua and booze-a-hol.

My ice chest got kicked out of DEF CON! WAAAAAAAAAA!!!!! The goons were so sad to give me the bad news. It looked like it pained them to tell me that i had to take it to my room. I have a work around for next year's con though. tee hee....

Regarding the van...I have a van that I will be bringing next year because I am taking my kids to Rootz. Since my husband is not a geek, he will take them there. This year, he spent a lot of time in the room being bored because he didn't get a badge.

Since he will be tending to the Jr. Hackers (because he will have a badge), I am sure that we can arrange rides. Kids are old enough to be in the room alone for a couple of hours (provided they stay out of the mini-bar) and he can haul some fellow hackers to the Con.

I think it's an excellent idea and will give my bored husband something productive to do when he is not tending to the Jr. Hackers. LOL Once he is in Rootz with the kids though, he won't be able to leave so we could only do it for a couple hours like 7:30 - 9:30 a.m. or something like that. My van seats 8 (including the driver). I cannot guarantee rides back. He is usually the designated driver and I am the designated drunk...but I may have to break him in on the drinking arena next year.

I'd never advocate bringing in outside booze, even if you're a hard cider drinker like myself and can't find any at The Rio... but if you're drinking what the hotel provides in a form they provide it, it's hard to complain. We had a particular bartender collecting containers of alcohol they didn't sell at the hotel so they could have evidence to complain with. So, throw your crap away, too.

Were there any recycle bins for the empty bottles? Also I know there were a couple of homebrewers at the con, so maybe we could have a separate bin for beer bottles in case they want some.

I wouldn't have a problem with buying from the Rio (or any other establishment) if the prices were fair and the bartenders weren't actually "Event Service Representatives" or "Hospitality Associates". Bartenders know how to handle a large volume at one time and aren't second guessing the drinks being ordered. It might just be a good idea to buy the booze from the hotel as the event, and then staff a resell operation. My main argument here is that it feels like the hotel is trying to get people to leave the con to drink at the bars inside the hotel (b/c drinks are half the cost there), when in fact we want to spend all of our time inside the event. As a side note, I did pay the high price many times just for convenience, but that's not what should drive the cost in VEGAS because you can literally go just about anywhere in that city to get your drink on.

On the subject of the van, I think it would be a great idea to put together some kind of van share or shuttle system for during the con. I was fortunate enough to already have a ride share planed during DC21, but we passed about 30-40 people walking each morning heading into the parking lot. It was a pretty mild summer this past year, but this is not a habit you want attendees getting into.

I would be willing to volunteer on either front to organize or be a part of a group to manage hotel/outside booze or a "get to the con" ride share (maybe even a "sober-ride back to the hotel so you don't get pulled over for drunk driving" shuttle).
