Why do I picture a hamster in a harness strapped to the balloon?

I don't know, could this be their testing site?

A third party security audit is the IT equivalent of a colonoscopy. It's long, intrusive, very uncomfortable, and when it's done, you'll have seen things you really didn't want to see, and you'll never forget that you've had one.

We talked about doing this last year, but sadly there was little or no interest.

It's a shame I didn't hear about it last year. A coworker and I came up with a similar idea independently earlier this year and I had hoped to set it up before the con. Glad someone else was able to pull this off. I'm very interested and picking the brains of all involved.

Getting permission for a launch site anywhere around the Riv was a major hassle. On top of that, it looked like we'd run afoul of local laws, as well as state and federal regulations.

Sincerely guys, good luck. You'll need it.

What we were investigating last year was going to a height of 400 feet in order to get above the roof of the hotel and get as wide of a coverage area as possible. The plan was to do it in 100 ft increments with a 5 - 10 minute rest period at each 100 foot level. Looking for about an hours duration. Pull it down and plug it into a mapping software.

As Thorn said, getting the approval from the various state and federal groups proved to be a little much as none of us were local.

                    Re: WarBallooning

If it's under 115 cu. ft. and attached to a line, I don't think the FAA requires anything beyond streamers or lights on the line at 50ft(?) intervals; provided it doesn't go past 400AGL, is more than a certain distance from the airport and has an emergency deflation device should it come free of the line. There might be city or state regs, but I'm pretty sure the feds don't much care about balloons that meet those limits.

Above that volume or height, you get into FAA requirements for free flight, tethered operation or moored operation. Were you guys trying to get authorization for blimp-like free flight or tethered operation of a larger balloon?

We were looking at tethered operation or a surplus weather balloon. It turned out to be a little too ambitious for a first time event.

That's pretty much what I ran into. I was hoping to have 2 counter rotating antenna arrays but the weight lead to a prohibitively large balloon volume, both for filling it with helium and getting authorization for flights.

It was my hope to cover the area under and around it with large yagi array that tracked it's orientation as it logged. Too ambitious.

I started collecting info at http://www.hackerscouts.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

Never got around to logging my temp/pressure/humidity air-mass calculations.

From what I understand - anyone who knows more feel free to correct me - the hotel told them they couldn't launch so the daily launches listed in the program were canceled but they went ahead and flew it at least once anyway. Shame I missed it.
